Whilst writing No Stress Wedding Planning, it occurred to me that for us, the biggest and most stressful decision we made for our wedding was the venue.
The right location is essential – it is the stage on which your big day is set. The look, the feel, the size and the layout of the venue are just some of the elements which can affect your big day. I’ve put together a few tips to make sure you select the right one for you!
The Wedding Planner
First and foremost – do you like the wedding planner? This is the person who is going to be your point of contact, your wedding doula, your angel with Swarovski encrusted wings for the duration of your planning period. If you don’t like them, if you can’t work with them – don’t walk, RUN! It is not the venue for you. If you can’t trust them, the run up to your wedding will become immeasurably more stressful.
Practicalities
Does the venue work on a practical level? Is there plenty of space? Can everyone be seated comfortably? If you’re planning a church wedding is the venue a reasonable distance from the church? If it is a destination wedding, is there plenty of accommodation available for your guests? If you think of the practicalities early on, it will save you a lot of stress further down the line!
Food!
As part of our wedding package we were offered a tasting of our wedding menu. I would recommend requesting a tasting if it isn’t offered to make sure you’re both happy with the food. Know that you will never please everyone, but make sure that the both of you are nothing less than delighted with your menu choice.
The Vision
Finally, remember I spoke about ‘the list’ in my original post? The one where you sit together and think about what you want, before anyone else has a say in your big day? Is this particular venue what you envisioned for your big day? If yes, excellent! If no, don’t rule it out completely, especially if you really like it, but you do need to sit and think about the repercussions for the rest of your wedding plans. Can you incorporate everything you wanted? Are you both happy to make the compromises required? You may even decide to go in a completely different direction, and that is perfectly fine, it is your day!
We fell in love with our venue instantly and it ticked almost every box on our list. My advice would be to look around at as many venues as you can. I contacted around 30 and discounted many on either budget alone. We ended up being seriously interested in four, and we viewed each of them, armed with a list of questions and plenty of time to consider all the options available and if they would work for us.
Just remember, planning your wedding can be fun! It can get stressful but remember the end game! You, marrying the person you love and spending the rest of your lives together!
Happy hunting!
